Psychics, Mediums and Bears, Oh My!

There has been some discussion regarding the use of psychics, mediums, “sensitives” or any other sort of non-technical scientific type of ‘equipment.’ (Pardon the term, all you psychics, but if you are really psychic, you already know I mean it in the kindest way.)

First off, what do these terms really mean? Are they well defined or are they as varied as the people who wear them? A psychic is a person who can glean information through extrasensory perception (commonly referred to as ESP.) This information can be as specific as names, dates, times, places and that sort of thing. If the person doesn’t get specifics, then generally speaking that person would be known as a “sensitive.” Sensitives are folks who get feelings or intuitions rather than the specific information already mentioned.

To give an example, a psychic might perceive that a spirit visiting an area is named Mary and she died during a great sickness or a plague whereas a sensitive might go into an area and get a deep feeling of pain or suffering, but not names or specific information about what’s causing it. A sensitive might just have the hair raise on the back of their necks or queasiness in their stomachs when they sense something.

On the other extreme is the medium, who not only can get specific information, they can also communicate to some degree. Our team has had a medium who communicated with spirits and helped them to “pass to the other side.” We don’t generally bring someone like that along on investigations, but we have an option if the client requests that sort of thing. Since we would really like to capture evidence of spirits, having someone ‘pass’ them is sort of counter-intuitive to the process, but can give a grieving loved one relief.

So there are the three types. One is like a temperature gage, one is like a radio receiver and one is like a two-way radio. That’s oversimplification, and the most reliable mediums seem to be hit or miss.

In our experience we prefer not having anyone doing any sort of spirit communication, whether as a psychic or a medium. They take away from our advertised services, which consist of scientific-based investigations. The other disadvantage to using someone with ESP is they tend to lead an investigation, intentionally or not, and you may miss things that they didn’t pick up on. Which brings up the final point.

Is their ability legitimate? Without someone to confirm known names or situations, there is no way to determine that. If the psychic says a person’s name is Tony, who can dispute it? If they say concentrate on that room and no unusual EMF levels come up and no EVP’s are heard, what do you have? A team who was influenced by someone who may or may not have any abilities.

We all have some minor ‘psychic’ abilities, whether you call it intuition or being sensitive, and we should use our instincts to guide us. Trust your inner feelings and follow the course of action that feels right to you.

    Hey Guys
I guess you’d call me a sensitive. I get impressions from places, sometimes from people too. There are times when I can communicate with ghosts. It’s not all the time and it seems the ghosts get to call the shots, if they don’t want to talk, not much is going to happen.

I can see from your perspective, and I respect it. If you can’t ’see’ anything and your instruments don’t show anything, then how exactly are you supposed to believe anything one of ‘us’ tells you. And let’s not forget that there are a lot of folks out there who for whatever reasons, make stuff up as they go along.

So it’s difficult to go along with someone who claims to be psychic. Fair enough!

On our side of the tracks – we’re not so sure some of your instruments are for real either. ;) That’s not just poking a stick at you.

I’ve listened to some evps – sometimes you can make out a voice – most of the time I’ll give the benefit of the doubt and say it wasn’t dubbed in. But here is what I don’t understand – if I have a conversation with a ghost, I hear them in plain english, with normal voices. Why then does an evp sound so garbled? Why is it nearly impossible to understand what they are saying? Probably there is something I’m missing. Perhaps it’s the instruments that are lacking, maybe electronics changes the voice frequency, tone, whatever. I’m sure I don’t know, but I am rather curious.

I’ve never used instruments, and haven’t actually gone ‘ghost hunting’ to try and get proof. Proof wasn’t ever necessary for me. I have been doing some research on it though and plan to give your instruments a try. If nothing else I’m sure it’ll be interesting.

Hi Ilse, my theory is that you are hearing the voice(s) in your head, so your reception is clear. (if you get my meaning) With the EVP’s I think spirits have to cause air or something to vibrate to cause audible sounds, and that may be tough for them to do – sort of like opening a door or moving an object. So, to make a clear voice for the recorder to pick up is sorta iffy. Maybe it’s like a electropharynx that a person with throat cancer gets, and the electropharynx in this case has weak batteries. It’s just a thought..
thanks for the comment! – And I don’t mind the occasional stick : )

Ok, Rob, I guess that makes sense. There are times when I can tell it’s a telekinetic thing going on, but other times I could swear they’re absolutely real. I wonder if those would be the times you could catch something. I’ll have to keep notes with that in mind.

I also understand where you would say that a psychic may alter thinking in a group -I was wondering about instruments doing the same thing in my case where I rely on my impressions. If I’m concentrating on instruments or gaging by instruments will that alter my perception? It could. Impressions can be tricky, and you certainly can start adding in your own commentary if you’re not careful. Full apparitions are different, they’re right smack in your face and either talking or not.

I guess it might be better to have people handling the instruments and not say what any readings are, and the psychic not reveal anything either until everything is over. (Not sure I could pull that off – I talk waaay too much). Then after the investigation is over you can check all the data and see if anything has come up.

It might take a bit of planning to give it a fair try.
    Thanks for the chat
